Recognizing Overwhelm for What It Really Is

Today – let’s recognize that feeling of overwhelm for what it really is — a feeling.
A feeling that is coming from your brain.

Take a minute to reflect on that. You are not this feeling.
This feeling is a symptom of the brain.

When our brain gets pulled in many directions, certain brain systems become alerted. This results in a feeling of overwhelm.

Your brain is responding to its environment.

Separate yourself from this feeling. It is merely a reaction that is occurring in your brain.

Today, You Take Control

Today — you will take control of this feeling. Today, you will address this feeling at its root — the brain.

You will start by applying self-compassion, a proven approach to calm the brain.

A Moment of Self-Compassion

Put your hand on your heart.
Today, you love yourself. Radiate this love into your heart. Open up your heart to this warm embrace. Breathe out and release any tension in your body. You are loved. Sit in this moment and allow your heart to be open and warm.

Today, you love yourself.

You are doing the best you can with the brain you have. Anyone who would be in your shoes and has experienced your experiences would be exactly where you are right now. You are doing the best you can with your current brain and resources.

Give yourself grace and forgiveness for being human. We are all imperfect humans doing the best we can. No one is perfect. Everyone struggles.

There Is Hope

But there is hope. There is hope for a day without overwhelm. Because overwhelm is just a symptom of the brain and the brain is an organ and the brain can change.

Today you will love your brain. Nourish your brain with its basic needs — nutrition, sleep, and movement. Nourish your brain by limiting the negative thoughts.

Today, you love your brain and you take control of this feeling of overwhelm by accepting it as a feeling.

Allow this feeling without judgement or resistance. Allow and accept that being overwhelmed is a human feeling. A feeling is temporary.

Once you allow and accept that this is a feeling, see the hope that this brings. A feeling can change. The brain can change and where there is a potential for change, there is hope. There is hope to be calm. There is hope to be present.
